I just got an email update from Kiva, a non-profit organization that raises money in relatively affluent countries and passes it on to microlenders in poor countries. The genius of Kiva is that, as a donor, you get to pick the particular person who receives your money. Each borrower has a profile with background information and a summary of his or her business plan. However, once you make your loan, it will take several months for the borrower to pay. During that time, I tend to forget about Kiva. The new email updates are a great reminder about the people I am helping in my small way.
